WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION
REPORT ON 1930 SEASON
The Wellington Basketball Association retains the distinction of being the largest basketball association in New Zealand, according to tho report to be presented at tho annual general meeting on Monday. Tho number of teams playing in the competitions is still increasing. In ID2S thero wore 93 teams; in 1029, 115 teams; iind in 1930 there were 129 teams, representing 53 clubs. During the season nearly £370 was. raised by a queen carnival for the laying down of courts, an, offer having been made to contribute £250 to tho1 City Council. Teams from the association co-operated with the V.M.C.A. Pageant of Youth, and as a result about £.30 was added to the grounds fund. The season was a financial success, and the association was able to send three teams to play in intorprovinoial tournaments. The medical assistance fund has proved a great success, and the association has been, able to help in the payment of medical expenses of all players who were injured during matches. The A grade representative team was second to Auckland for tho New Zealand cup, the B team was beaten 10-8 by Canterbury for the Canterburyi Wellington cup, and the third grade team won all the matches played on the Taranaki tour. The Referees' Association, which was formed in 1928, has made wonderful progress, and great work was done last season. Initial steps have been taken for the formation of a properly constituted association, the growth of the movement proving this wise and necessary. The annual dance, which was held in the Mokoia Hall on 18th September, proved enjoyable, but it is hoped that in future more senior players will patronise this function. A games evening, taking the place of a wind-up function, was held in the Winter Show Buildings on 29th September. During the evening trophies were presented to the winningl teams by Mrs. Troup, the Mayoress, and Mr. W. M'Lay, patron, of the association. The presentation to the successful candidate in the Queen Carnival, and a smaller gift to other queens taking part, was also made. Clubs were very well represented, and the evening proved a great success. The thanks of the association are due to the patron, Mr. W. M'Lay, for his untiring interest, vice-patron, Mr. Shallcrass, Mr. Waddilove, for his services as hon. auditor, Mr. C. H. Ham, hon. solicitor, to all referees and helpers, and to the Press for its support. Also thanks to Miss E. Scott and Mrs. 6. A. Troup (vice-patrons) for their donations. Thanks are also due to Brymay, Hataitai School Committee, Wesley Union, and Constable Street Fire Station, for the use of courts free of charge (luring the season.
