To-morrow the Governor-General and Lady BJodisloe will be presont at the garden fete to be hold at tho Hutt Valley High School in aid of the Earthquake Kelief Fund. Captain and Mrs. Vaughan Hughes, ■ who have been the guests of Their Excellencies since Christmas, will returii to England by tho Eangitata to-mor-row. Flight-Lieutenant G. L. Stcdman has been promoted to be Squadron-Leader. Mr. IT. J. Mills, Auckland, Mrs. H. Morrison, Mastcrton, and Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Haggitt, Nelson, are among the guests at the Royal Oak Hotel. Mr. Brian D. Armstrong, of Akitio, is gazetted a pilot ofiicer in tho Kew Zealand Air Force. He has been posted to No. 2 (Wellington) squadron. Miv 11. 11. Mallett, manager of the West Indies cricket team on its Australian tour, is returning home with Mrs. and Miss Mallett by the Eangitata, which leaves Wellington, to-mor-row. • , Captain 11. E. Hughes, formerly of the cable steamer Iris, will leave Wellington by the Eangitata to-morrow for England. Among the guests at the Grand Hotel are the following: Messrs. E. Loughnan and Chas. C. Warner, Christchurch; H. M. Wright, Palmerston North; B. Wilkinson, Auckland; and C. Goodson, Hawera. Sc>. d-Lieutcnant E. C. Qucree, Now Zealand Staff Corps, having completed his course at the Eoyal Military College, Sandhurst, and his attachment lo the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, returned to tho Dominion recently. He lias been promoted to lieutenant, and posted to G.H.Q. Training Depot,.Trentham. Mr. H. Whito-Wickham, of London, who has been deep-sea fishing at Eussell, will be a passenger on the Bangitatu, which leaves Wellington for England to-morrow. Visitors to Wellington who are staying at the Empire Hotel include:— Messrs. A. M. Atchley, J. H. B. Tipling, and L. Henwood, Palmerston North; 32. Harding and J. Murdoch, Woodville; Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Lockhcad and Mr. J. Mitchell, Auckland. Mr. Harry Johnson, who for several years has been manager of the Melbourne branch of W. B. Carmichael and Co., Ltd., has been appointed manager of the company's New Zealand branch in succession to the late Mr. George W. Deane. Mr. Johnson, whose headquarters will be in Auckland, leaves Australia early next month to take up his now duties. Mr. Johnson will taka personal charge of the newsprint section of Carmichael and Co.'s business in New Zealand. Wing-Commander S. Grant-Dalton, Director of Air Services, went to the South Island last night. He is. to visit AVigram Aerodrome, where a course for the junior officers of the Air Force is at present being conducted. Mr. S. Hurst Seager, formerly of Ckristehurch, is spending the wiuter months at Palm Beach, near Sydney. According to advice received recently in Christchurch, Mr. Hurst Seager is improving in health, but his medical adviser has urged him not to return to New Zealand till after the winter. . Mr. John Dugdale, of Christchureh, has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the staff of the Wellington Boys' College caused by the transfer of Mr. F. S. Eamson, 8.A., to the Hutt Valley High School. Included in the guests at the Hotel St. George are the following:—Mr. E. Axford, Mr. and Mrs. L. S. Graichen, England. was the. scene of a pleasant function last evening, when opportunity was taken by the staffs of tho Customs, Marine, and Navy Departments to make .i presentation and say farewell to Mr. F. W. Thompson, who for the past &h years has been custodian of the Customs building, and who leaves on Saturday for Christchurch to take up the position of deputy-inspector of messengers at tho Government Buildings in that city, to which post he has been promoted. Dr. Craig, C.M.G., Comptroller of Customs, in making the presentation, spoke eulogistical!} 1 of the manner in which Mr. Thompson had carried out his duties, and referred to his courteous and obliging disposition. Mr. Thompson was presented with a handsome travelling rug, and a gift of a handbag was made to his mother. The cleaners employed at the building presented Mr. (Thompson with a wallet.
