EVIDENCE OF THE PILOT

At': the Magisterial . inquiry, into the jgrouiding of. the Hauraki at New Plymouth on 21st .February, the-pilot, Captain'1; M'lntyre, said that-the second time the,'; ; order "hard a-port" was given the vessel swung slowly. Witness could see thafi'it would not-answer quickly enough. Shortly afterwards witness was brought to realise by the captain's remark that the vessel was twin screw. He did not see the 'Notices "Keep clear of propellers"— this";lndicating twin screws. He had concluded that the vessel was single screw. The "accident would not have happened hadtthe vessel answered its helm, and had it been single screw, or alternatively had he known in time it was twin screw. The rock on which the Hauraki grounded was Hot known at the time of the accident.
