COST OF HANDLING

CARGO ON [THE WHARVES

The cost of labour handling English and foreign cargo on the Wellington wharves, including receiving, stacking, and delivering, increased last year from 24.38 d per ton on 425,277 tons to 25.24 d on a tonnage of 383,394 tons, stated the General Manager, Mr. J. Marchbanks, in. his annual report. The labour cost of handling Australian and coastal cargo was 24.44 J. per ton on a tonnage of 370,008 tons, as compared with 26.15 d per ton on 375,360 tons last year. The cause of the increased cost of labour for handling English and foreign cargo is duo to tho difference in the class of United States and Canadian cargo imported. The decreased cost of coastal and Australian labour has been brought about by a better control of receiving cargo from these classes of vessels.
