THE FULTON MEDAL

FIRST AWARD MADE

TO MR. E. R. M'KILLOP

Under the will of the late Mr. J. E. Fulton, M.1.C.E., of Wellington, for many years one of the Dominion's leading engineers, provision was made, for the annual award of two medals,-one in gold, for the best paper by a member or associate member of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, and ono in silver, for the best paper by a student contributed during the year. The first award of the gold medal was made to Mr. A. R: M'Killop, A.M.1.C.E., of the City Engineer's staff, Wellington, at the annual general meeting of the Wellington branch of the society, for a paper read before the society on stormwater control. There was no award of the silver medal. The awards are decided by the trustees, who have the right to withhold an award should they consider tho papers to be of insufficient merit. In making the presentation, the president, Mr..D. K. Blair, M.l.Meeh.E., heartily congratulated Mr. M'Killop, and added that' it was hoped that an , award, of the silver medal -would be made during the'current year. The trustees, Messrs. F. J. Jones, J. G. Lancaster, and: A. S. Mitchell, spoke; in approving terms of Mr. M'Killop 's paper as one among a number of meritorious papers submitted, and expressed a wish to see more from his pen. Mr. M'Killop briefly responded. The design of the medal is by Mr. Gyles Turner, of the engineering staff of the Wellington Harbour Board, and represents .various phases of engineering activities. In the ordinary course the presentation would have been made at the annual meeting of the New. Zealand society, held recently at Auckland, but Mr. M'Killop was at that time engaged in emergency work at Napier, being in charge of water supply restoration following the earthquake.
