WAIRARAPA BEATEN
HOME TEAM'S BIG SCORE
The Wellington representative lawn tenuis team had a substantial win on Saturday, defeating Wairarapa by 19 matches to 5. The weather was at its worst during most o£ the matches, which were played at Miramar grounds, a cold and blustering northerly sweeping the courts and making good tennis difficult and brilliant tennis well-nigh impossible. The visiting players naturally suffered greatly though some of them—notably Miss N. Lleimng and Miss N. G. Welch-showed extraordinary judgment and used the wind well. It was unfortunate that the conditions were so bad, for the Wairarapa team included some very fine players—Mrs. M'Master, Mrs. E. B. Wellwood (nee Miss Marjorie Myers), the present New jea.land doubles champion, and Ji. H. Hodder, all being of fine ability. Hodder severely tried Xi ML. Ferkins in their first set, and Mrs. Wellwood often played wonderful shots against Miss F. North, but could not conquer her remarkable steadiness. Mrs. AJfMaster, however, .could not adjust heiself to the wind until she had been playing for some. time. One of the most interesting matches of the day was that in which Miss Fleming beat Miss M. East. Both girls revealed strong strokes, and there was only two games' difference between them at the end of three sets. Miss Welch also showed great vigour, maintaining a great pace throughout her match, and simply hitting Miss M. Williams off the court.
