ST. PAUL'S PRO-CATHEDRAL

As on many former occasions at this season of the Ecclesiastical year, a selection from the St. Matthew Passion music of Sebastian Bach was sung on hunday evening in St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral by a slightly augmented choir to a devout congregation which completely nlled tne church The selection comprised lour episodes from the Passion story; The Passover, Olivet, Gethscmane, and the Cross; with a prologue and final chorus. lhe sole, parts were taken by Miss Alexander (who replaced Mrs. Alexander, absent through indisposition), Mrs. Wilfred Andrews, Mr. Chas. Williams, Mr. Bmet Brown and Mrs. H. I. Graves, and the devotional but vocally exacting music throughout the work was finely interpreted by all. Miss Ava Symons played the beautiful violin obbligato to the groat solo, "Have Mercy on Me, 0 Lord," with her unfailing skill and pathetic expression, and the accompaniments were m the hands of Mrs. Furrier Steers and Mr. .Robert Parker, the combination of pianoforte and organ providing an effective variety of tone colour. Before the Passion music Canon Percival James gave a short account of the work, which added considerably to the interest of the congregation.
