TRENTHAM MEETING
NEW AMMUNITION IN USE
PINE PEEFOBMANOES1
(By "The Post's" Spocial Reporter.) TKENTHAM, This Day. Trcntham' records for Mark s VII. am- , munition were eclipsed • yesterday after-.; noon, when competitors at the National .little Association meeting fired over short ranges in tho first oE the more serious matches of the meeting. ' In tho King and Henry match, seven shots at each 300 yards, 500 yards, and 800 . yards', .where the possible score was 105, ■ twenty-one competitors out ot' 140 scored 100 or over. A. E. Barker (Eong.i, Marlborough), and W. H. Ballinger (Petone) finished the shoot with 103 each, but as ■they both had possibles at, 600 yards, and . Barker had the better score at COO yards, he won the match. The riflemen returned the following cards:— Barker—3ooyds: (44)4555:155 33 ■ 500 yds: (54)5555555 «'O >» 600 yds: (44)5555555 - So . -BaHingor—3ooyds: (3)5554555 34 500 yds: (44)5555155 34 600 yds: (3)5555555 35 ■The figures- iv parentheses ore sighters. They need not necessarily be taken by the ". marksmen in his score, .but i£ the first .is taken he must take the second. The quality of the shooting may be., judged from the fact that at 500 yards , ■'.Barker, discarded a 5 aud a. 4, and then , finished with a possible. , '. "W. N. Masofieid (Marlboroiigh), A. C. Edmonds (Alfredton), and H. E. I'east , ■'(Greytown)' each scored 102. There were ; nine scores of 101, and seven of 100.' (The , full prize list appears on 'page 13)._ 1 The lowest score to be included -in the ;'A grade'prize list was OS, which is an- ' other indication of the quality ■of the i shooting. / ■ ' > THE NEW. AMMUNITION. , 1 Three factors contributed to the success - of yesterday's "performance, which must be regarded as one. of the finest ever .put up at Trentham. In the first place, the : quality of the marksmen; the second, the .weather; and last,, but by no means least,--tho ammunition. In fact the: ammunition played the biggest part. This year a new - brand of ammunition is being used at S Trenthom, 1930 make, and it is necessary ■ only to refer- to yesterday's performance 4 to realise that it is meeting with high ] : fuyour among riflemen. Ammunition has ] been a burning question with rifle clubs throughout the Dominion for some time past, and there have been many complaints as to the quality issued. This has i not been of an up-to-date make, and 1 generally it has not been very satisfactory, i The use of the 1930 make has already had j a" marked effect, 'and if conditions .ire i suitable,1 there is no reason why further 1 good performances should not be register- ' cd at this meeting. The weather at Trentham yesterday wus i perfect, being nn ideal day for rifle shoot- ; ing. The light was good, and there was .i just sufficient breeze to encourage cau- ' tion. To-day was overcast when a. start .was made, but the weather cleared, and clouds gave place to bright sunshine with a light wind.
