STREET-CLEANING
(To the Editor.) Sir —Please allow me space to complain of the state o£ the streets on the tram route from Courtcnay place to 11ataitai tunnel. I pass along Elizabeth, Brougham, and Pirie streets every day, aud for the last ten days the gutters have been full of rubbish, including decaying vegetables, fish, and chips, paper, and other things as well as dust. Visitors to the Capital City must gam a good impression of the efficient street-cleaning methods of our City Council. It is right that the front entrance to our cit> should be beautiful and kept in good order, but many visitors on holiday are curious to know what the back entrance is like As a Wellingtoman I always felt proud of our city, but one comes to earth when one has to pass that sort o£ thing every day. Surely rates are high enough. Would it not be possible to help tlie unemployed by keeping on a few extra men to clean the streets move otten, and so protect the public health?-I am, etc., HYGIENE.
