INTERNAL COMBUSTION PESTS

(To the Editor.) Sir,—There may be mure than meets the oye in the moderately expressed com- I plaint made by the Christehureh City Council against excessive aviation over the city on Sundays. Municipal authon- | ties generally, however, appear to be rather chary of tackling the suppression of unnecessary noises. Christchurcli has now taken a. definite if trembling step in that direction. But whoever is responnil>le for the preservation of the public peace police or local authority, there appears to be plenty of work to be done in the effective control of this serious menace of excessive noise, and tli.it not only on Sundays. Wellington city and suburbs would be all the better for a good "clean up" of those fiendish motor-cyclists who at all hours turn the streets into dirt tracks. The new British Koad Traffic Act provides that every motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine must be fitted with a suitable silencer or other contrivance for reducing the noise caused by the exhaust. It is common knowledge that prosecutions tor offences of this kind are sometimes successful in Wellington, but for all that this intolerable nuisance persists, not only on Sundays but every day and every nMit, from dark to dawn. I*or is the motor-cvele the only internal combustion pest. Do Magistrates deal over leniently with' offenders brought before them, or are such offenders 100 slippery for the proper authority to catch? It is not easy to answer that question; but there is no doubt about the wearing effect upon the public health of noisy machines and noisy people using them wrecking the peace at night in residential areas m city and suburbs. Is there no effective remedy.' ~J am' °tC" DISTURBED.
