MOTOR TAXATION
THE HORSE POWER BASIS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWJ3KA, 20th March. In referring to the statement of the Prime Minister, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, that the Government had not yet considered the question of imposing a horsepower tax, Mr. W. O'Callaghan, president of the North Island Motor Union, says the idea of such a tax in New Zealand is too fantastic to merit consideration. It has been a colossal failure in England. Mr. O'Callaghan was of opinion that Mr. Forbes realised that motorists generally were already taxed to the limit of their means and patience.
At the meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association at Christchurch last week, a request was received from Miss B. Hinds, owner of Harold Logan, asking that the world's raco record time of 4min 13 2-ssec put up^ by her horse be officially recognised. Tho board decided to grant the request so far ■•is the time iind size of the track were concerned, and to congratulate Miss Hinds on owning such a brilliant horse.
