MARGARINE DISPLACED
Mr. G. A. Mills, Wellington, has received a letter, dated London, 12th February, in which it is remarked, "we are on a very much better wicket with butter. Prices have moved jip very satisfactorily during the past two weeks, and the Continent, taking a fair quantity of Australian and Argentine, has just taken the surplus off this market that was necessary. . . . Retailers met the low prices that ruled very well, and a lot "of butter was sold at Is and Is Id per 1b to the consumer, whilst Is 2d is still the price for best New Zealand and Australian in a large number of important retail stores. As the heaviest supplies of the season have arrived, we are hoping that the present position is quite sound, but if retail prices are forced up to Is 4d then we may look for a considerablo drop in consumption. At least 500 tons of margarine weekly, mostly best qualities, have been displaced by cheap butter during the last few months."
