REPRESENTATIVE MATCH

The Wellington and Wairarapa^ lawn tennis teams liiot at Mirainar grounds to-day. The teams were: — Wellington: E. ML. Perkins, M. E. Smith, A. E. Sandra!, E. AY Boussoll, H. N. Burns, G. Lozard, Misses D. Howe, F... North, M. Williams, M. East, M. Mneassey, Mrs. P. Burke. Wairarapa: H. Hodder, H. Miller, D. L. Taverner, E. B. Wollwood, H. Bunny, C. W. Perry, Mrs. H. M'Master, Mrs. E. E. Wellwood, Misses M. G. Welch, N. Hemming, E. G. Bradley, M. Cameron. Miss E. Brady withdrew from the Wellington team, and Mrs. Burke replaced her. A shower of rain delayed the commencement of play for over an hour, and the matches were "begun in a strong northerly. The wind increased almost to gale foreo after the matches had been in progress for an hour, and tho visiting players were very handicapped. Miss D. Howe (Wellington) beat Mrs. 11. M'Master (Wairarapa), 6-3, C-2. Miss Howe's greater steadiness and better use of the-wind, when it favoured her, enabled her to win the match against a hard hitting and vigorous opponent. Mrs. M'Master was sorely puzzled by short balls when playing down tho wind. Miss P. North (Wellington) beat Mrs. £. B. Wellwood (Wairarapa), 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Miss North played with remarkable steadiness, wearing down the attack of (Mrs. Wellwood (nee Miss Marjorie Myers), the New Zealand doubles champion. Mrs. Wellwood was often brilliant, but found the conditions, quite beyond her, and was greatly troubled by the queer behaviour of the ball. E. A. Eoussell (Wellington) beat D. L. Taverner (Wairarapa), 6-1, 6-2. The match was much closer than the score, Taverner presenting a spirited defence, but .finding Eoussell a trifle too accurate and forceful. M. E. Smith (Wellington) beat H. Miller (Wairarapa), 7-5, 6-2. Smith's all-court game and severity of stroke left Miller standing after the first set. A. B. Saundcrs (Wellington) beat E. B. Wellwood, 6-3, 6-1. Sandra! had little difficulty with. Wellwood, doing very much as he liked at the net and constantly tricking his opponent with clever shots. H. -N. Burns (Wellington) lost to H. Bunny (Wairarapa), 4-0, 11-9, 3-6. The match lasted for "'two hours, during which time both men were playing carefully. Bunny won through forcing the pace a little more.than Burns. G. Lczard (Wellington) beat C. W. Penny (Wairarapa), 6-3, 6-2. Lezard's steadiness proved too groat for Penny, who found his best roturns sent back 'by the stubborn Wellington man. Miss M. East (Wellington) lost to Miss H. Flemming (Wairarapa), 5-6, 6-5, 5-7. It was a long interesting match og surprising standard considering the conditions, with very little between tho players. Miss Flemming just won aiter leading 5-3 in the third set. INTER-PROVINCIAL MATCH. E. ML. Perkins (Wellington) beat Hodder (Wairarapa), 8-6, 6-2. It was a match full of hard hitting, with Perkins slightly more accurate, but Hodder played remarkably well. Perkins only just won the first set after some, fierce driving. Miss-'M. AVilliams (Wellington) lost to Miss N. G. Welch (Wairarapa), 6-5/ 3-6, 3-0. Mis Welch only just failed to win the first sot, and thereafter hit her way through g;imc after game. Her fast driving, well controlled, was remarkable in the bad conditions, and she had Miss Williams frequently out of position and unable to play rapid returns. Mrs. P. Burke (Wellington) bent Miss M. Cameron (Wairarapa)., 6-4, 4-(5, 6-2. This was a long'and patient match, Miss Cameron sometimes' driving well, but Mrs. Burkes steadiness proved the deciding factor. ■ . ■
