EFFORT TO REACH SETTLEMENT

(Received 16th February, 9 a.m.) DELHI, 15th February.. The Hindu-Moslem riots at Benares had the effect of inducing Mr. G-andM to agree to meet the Viceroy in an endeavour to reach a settlement of the Indian situation, probably on Tuesday. Pending the result of the Gandhi conference with the Viceroy, tension continues at Benares, where British troops were in occupation of the main streets all day long yesterday. The students who attempted to obstruct the police at Dnrgakuud were dispersed by a baton charge. The casualties as the result of thu faction lights yesterday were three killed and fiftyone injured. In Jambusar town, in the Broach district of tho Bombay Presidency, rioters killed one and injured two Government employees who were guarding crops.
