FIRE IN COURTENAY PLACE

An outbreak of fire in Courtenay place shortly before 7.30 yesterday morning was responsible for several shops aud offices in Griffiths Chambers being damaged by smoke and heat. The building is a two-story one. The fire originated on the first floor of the building in the rooms of Charles Lo Clerq, women's dress specialist. Tho fitting-room' and workroom with their contents were damaged by fire and water. Booms on the same floor, occupied by H. M. Lauchlan an,d Co., manufacturers' representatives, Bernaseoni Bros., signwriters, and ■ Bussell, women's tailor, were slightly damaged by heat ami smoke. Tho music shop of Andrew Williams on the- ground floor was damaged by water. The fire brigade was promptly on the scono and soon had the outbreak under control.
