LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
The first meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council for 1931 -was hold yesterday. There wore present:—Sir Alex. Roberts (Mayor) and Councillors A. M'Bain, W. G. ,Meldrum, D. S. Patrick, J. B. Boyd, A. E. Carver, "F. Campbell, J. Mitchell, A. Grierson, andA. J. Hobbs. : The Municipal Association advised that the annual conference would be hold at Eotorua, commencing on 4th March. The question of selecting representatives was left till the next meeting. The Town Clerk was granted leave to attend the conference. . The council resolved to pass' a bylaw making white rear mudguards on cycles compulsory. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, it was decided to place on sale a strip of land 80ft deep on High street, opposite the Town Hall, at £75 per foot. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Grierson, it was resolved to utilise the proceeds of the land, if sold, in redemption of the £20,000 (Victoria street and others) street widening loan. The question of leaving the dispute regarding the allocation of heavy traffic fees to the decision of a Magistrate instead of the Supreme Court, was left in the hands of a sub-committee composed of the Mayor and Councillors Hobbs, Mitchell, and Campbell, with power to act. c A dispute with the owner of a property in Mudie street was left with Councillor Meldrum, who will report to the next council meeting. An application to erect a gafage on Tiroh anga road was granted during the pleasure of the council, a charge of 10s per annum being made for the site. ■ The- Hutt Valley Eleetrie Power Board asked for permission to erect a sub-station in an access, way between Puriri street and Maire avenue. The council raised no objection providing the place was adequately lit and was rcmovablo'at the pleasure of/the council, but pointed out that the access way had not yet been vested in the council by the Crown. During last month 2D buildings, to the value of £10,730, were created in Lower Hutt, as. against 46, to the value of £23,518, during the corresponding period last year. The council agreed to the' application of the Swimming Club for the rearrangement .of- a light near the spring board, for tho Hso of the baths for a carnival on 3rd February, and for a fixed foe of £2 2s for each carnival. On tho motion of Councillor Patrick, the engineer is. to report on .the street lighting of tho Bell Block. Tho question of ragwort in the borough is to be investigated by the borough officers. .■■'■■
