HUTT-PETONE CONTEST
The Lower Hutt and the Pctonc Amateur Athletic and Cycling Clubs held the fii'st half of an inter-club contest on the Hutt Recreation Ground last evening. The conditions were ideal, for there was no wind, and the turf was very firm. Points given for places were 5, 3, and 1 for first, second, and third. Hutt outclassed Petone in the running events, gaining most points in three of the four races. The fliscus, long jump, and hurdles were gifts to Hutt, the club taking all possible points in these events. Petone made. up leeway on the cycling, but there were only two races, and on the . whole programme Petone was well down, the points being 52 for Hutt, and 30 for Petbnc. AH events were from scratch. The Petono club has no lady runners, so that the Hutt ladies did not compete. The contest will be concluded on the Petone Recreation Ground to-morrow evening, beginning at 6.30. Results are:— 100 yds Junior.—A. Bell (Hutt), 1; R. Wallis (Petone), 2; J,. Mair (Hutt), 3. Won easily. Time, 10' 4-sscc. 220yds.—J. Cunningham (Hutt), 1; S Shore (Potono), 2; K. M'lntyre (Hutt), 3. A c j oae finish. Time, 23 4-sscc. 4-lOyds.—S. Shore (Petone), 1; W. J. Roberts (Hutt), 2; K. O'Connell (Hutt), 3. There were only five startors. Roberts led nearly all the way, Shore passing him In the straight to win narrowly, with O'Connell close up. There was a yard between first and third men. Time, Sosec. SSOyds.—A. Henderson (Hutt), 1; W. Wilson (Petone), 2j Bowman (Hutt), 3. This was a great contest between Henderson and M'Carthy, a visiting athlete, who was not in the running, tor points. M'Carthy went to the front 'at the start, and looked lite staying there all 'the way, but Henderson cams up strongly over the last, half-furlong and won by a yard. Corrected placings made Wilson second and Bowman third. Time, 2min 4sec. 120 yds • Hurdles.—D. M'Holm (Hutt), 1; W. H. Roberts (Hutt), 2; .T. W. Roberts (Hutt), X. The only starters. Time, 17 2-ssec. Won by a wheel. Time, lmin 13 2-5 sec. Ono Mile Cycle.—T. Rbwe (Petono), 1; L. Hal! (Hutt), 2; G. Clark (Petone), 3. The s!x starters were bunched nearly all the way. In a grod sprint for home Rowe drew clear, and won by a length and a half, with a similar distance between Hall and Clark. Time, 2min 40scc. ■ ■ 75yds Hutt Ladles' Handicap.—Miss B.
