NEW BRIDGE DAMAGED
TWO MEN NARROWLY ESCAPE
(By Telegraph.—Preßß Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Extensive damage is reported to have been caused to the new bridge in course of construction at the Woodvillc end of tho Mauawatu Gorge this morning as the result of heavy floods. Following heavy rain in the Wairarapa, tho river rose rapidly, and the flood bore down on the bridge at a considerable rate, bearing with it heavy timber and debris. The temporary staging was carried away, and also material, including the engine for pile-driving and three sets of piles. The damage ,is estimated at £300; It, is probable that the work will be held up for some days. Fortunately, the pumping gear was re- [ moved a short time ago, otherwise the damage would havo been much greater. Two men were working on the temporary frame of tho bridge when it was carried away. They had a narrow escape, catching hold of a wire rope attached to the bank and pulling themselves to safety.
