SODIUM CHLORATE
RISK OF FIRE
A farm hand, Mr. Hector Johnstone, who had been spraying ragwort with sodium chlorate, was severely burned at Paeugaiva, near Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, on Thursday (states a local correspondent). He was returning home wheeling tho sprayer and his clothes had become saturated with the chemical. Friction caused by rubbing against the sprayer ignited his clothing. He hurried to a horse trough near by and tho flames were quenched. Mr. Johnstone was severely burned on tho body, arms, and logs. He was admitted to the Te i-'uke Hospital, where his condition is reported to be greatly improved. Warnings as to tho possible dangers of tho use of sodium chlorate have been issued by tho Department of Agriculture, Sodium chlorate is a powerful oxidising agent, to be treated with respect. If a solution of it dries on organic material, like clothes, that material would become easily ignited. In using it care should be taken to keep it oft clothes, and care should be taken not to carry matches in one's pocket.
