ON TRENTHAM TRACK
GOOD WINDING-UP TRIALS HISTORIC IN" SPLENDID FORM The weather was hue and the tracks in good order for galloping at Trentham this morning. The inside of the trial grass and the tan were available for fast work, but the grass was almost exclusively used. Tho going was fast. Hunting Call was not unduly bustled in traversing six furlongs, but he was doing his work smoothly all the way. He will not be racing till the Wairarap.i Meeting, where S. Gerrand will probably have tho mount on him. Mythology and. Taura Lad did five furlongs together, but were not timed. Marjoram drew away from Barneses over the concluding stages of a mile work-out, finishing three lengths clear of his companion in lmin 47 l-ssec, the last half-mile being clone in 54sec. Marjoram leaves for New Plymouth on Tuesday, and he should not return empty-handed. Barneses, with his stablemate, Rothen, goes to Waipukurau on the same day. Rothen galloped live furlongs with Lady Bene, who has only ■ just begun fast work again, and he was doing as well as she was at tho close. The time was lmin 3 2-ssec, and for the last half-mile 50' l-ssec —a good gallop. Dolomite, alone, went seven furlongs in lmin 31 2-ssec. This horse is in capital order, and if he would only do as well in his races as he does on the track ho would be a danger in any company. He may finish has racing career in the autumn, and do stud work next season. Tea Queen, doing her work attractively, finished several lengths ahead of Open Cheque in a six-furlong gallop, on the outside of the 'course proper. No time was taken. MISS RANSOM GOES WELL. Miss Ransom, picked up by Spearlad between the four and three furlongs, did the last half-mile of a seven-fur-long trial in 52sec, the pace being ou mainly over the final three furlongs, which occupied 37sec. ' Miss Ransom drew away from her stablemate over the concluding part, and, with the dash she has been infusing into her recent gallops, should .earn some stake-money , over the holidays. ■ She has no engagement till the seeond day at Awapuni, where she will be required to go over nine furlongs in the Himatangi Handicap, a distance she' has not yet attempted. *■ On the tan, Zephyrus finished clear of Intruder at the,end of five furlongs in lmin 6sec, the last half-mile being done in 52 2-osec. Dainty Ways had a length the better of Black Mint at the end of a mile in lmin 45sec, the last half-mile taking 53 I-Dsec. Dainty Ways was travelling comfortably throughout, and, reasonably handicapped, should make amends shortly for her recent failures. She has no engagement on the first day at Awapuni. Saltpot and Half Acre were stepped over five furlongs together, the former having a small advantage at the close. The full journey occupied lmin 5 3-5 sec, and" the last hnlf-mile 51 3-ssee. Both these horses are in the Maiden Plate at Awapuni. Two of H. B. Lorigan's two-year-olds, Waratah (Acre —Gladiolo) and Lavington (Hunting Song—Heather Spray) sprinted together down tho straight on tho two-year-old track, tho former appearing to be going the moro easily at the end. Courtlike and Tourist pleased in their gallop by registering lmin 30 2-ssee for seven furlongs, taking lmin 17sec for the last six furlongs, and 52see for the final half-mile. Courtlike impressed the more, but Tourist made his best showing for some time, and is improving. SMART JIECEOF WORK. Acorn was responsible for a smart piece of work when she beat Salt Spray over half a mile in 4S 3-ssee, the fastest time for the distanco during the morning. The filly lost a couple of lengths at the start, but quickly made up leeway, and after heading her companion, stalled off a determined effort by him over, the final few chains. Salt! Spray's showing was also attractive, for he had a heavier weight up and displayed real gameness when called upon near the end of the half-mile. Neither of these two has yet raced, but both will contest the Nursery Handicap at Awapuni. Ephialtes was sent over a mile alone, and ho did the distance iu lmin 46 2-5 sec, taking lmin 32 3-osoc for tho last, seven furlongs, and 53 2-ssec for the final half-mile. Ho worked well throughout, and his effort was a sound one for a horse on his own. Ho climbs high when galloping and a wet' track should not trouble him. He also has a long, powerful stride that suggests he will develop into a more than useful sort with a little experience. Acis drew clear of Typo in half a mile on the two-year-old. track in 49sec. Acis has improved a lot lately, and he should go well in his races at Tauherenikau. On tho other hand, Type is not galloping as well as she was in the early spring, but she was never a brilliant track worker. White Doe, recently returned from a short let-up, raced with Valqucttc" all the way in a five-furlong spin that took lmin 3 2-ssec, tho last half-mile being done in 50 l-ssee —an attractive effort. White Doe has not been entered for races over tho holidays, but will probably be seen Out again at Foxton. Historic, Duellona, and Staghunter engaged in an interesting trial over a mile on the remote outside of the course proper. They ran in that order in from the outside rail, and, after a slow beginning, taking 55 l-ssec for the first half-mile, came home the final half-mile in 53 2-ssec, making lmin 4S 3-ssee for the full distance, which was somewhat over a mile. Historic was a length ahead of Duellona at the finish, Staghunter being another two lengths away. As an actual trial for the Manawatu Cup tho gallop was disappointing, as the pace was not well judged, and none of the horses had to make any undue exertion. Historic is looking very well, and if tho going is at all soft at Awapuni next Friday ho will be a danger in spite of his big weight. Wee Night sprinted five furlongs ,alone in lmin 4sec, taking 50 l-oscc for tho last half-milo —the best gallop ho has dono since being taken up a month ago. Gold Sand went seven furlongs alone, coming homo the final half-mile in 50 2-ssec. Joie do Val did an easy six furlougs, not being after time. Most of the other horses who havo engagements round about during the holidays were exercised on the tan.
