CORNWELL CUP

RECORD CONTEST EXPECTED

According to a letter received at last evening's meeting of the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association from the committee controlling the Cornwell Cup contest, which is to be held at Auckland next month, the contest should be a record one in every way. It was stated that challenges had been received from the following ports: Dunedin, Lyttelton, Christchurch, Wellington, Napier, TauraDga, Whangarei, JManukaii, Hamilton, and Plunmerton. The correct date for the start of the contest was 24th January. The chairman questioned the challenge by Plimmerton, and it was pointed out that if a mistake had not been made in the name the challenge should have gone through the association, although Plimmerton was. in point of fact, a separate harbour. In the absence of the Plimmerton delegate,, further discussion was deferred. Mr. G. F. Bothamley, who had been appointed manager of the Cornwell Cup crew, stated that in view oi the alteration in the date of the first race he would be unable to act. It was decided to approach Mr. P. G. Easson, of Auckland, formerly of Wellington, and ask him if he would act as manager. The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club advised that it had decided to donate £25 or any greater amount that might be collected, and would support the Anniversary Day regatta in Evans Bay, provided the prize-money and entrance-fees were the same as, last year. It was decided to award the same prizemoney as before, the same entrance-fees as last season having been fixed at the last meeting. A vote of thanks was passed to the members of the Heretaunga Boating Club who lent boats for the Cornwell Cup trials. Steps are to be taken to have the red light at the entrance to the Boat Harbour put into order, and to have the red fire alarm lamp on the road behind the sheds screened on the seaward side in order to avoid confusion.
