AWAPUNI GALLOPS
TRACK CONDITIONS IMPROVE SKYRIDER' DOES GOOD
(By Telegraph;) (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMERSTON NORTH; This Day. Track conditions were back to normal at" Awapuni yesterday morning, the course -proper, being firm and fast. The flags, however, were well out, and the horses were running considerably over the cor-' rect distance. - ... The plougli was out of use on Tuesday morning, but yesterday was in excellent order, an,d many of the candidates for the Christmas racing used it, quite, a. few refraining from undertaking fast, work. Visitors are, as was only to be expected, still conspicuous by their absence, but R. Miscall, head lad for T. Lloyd, of Riccarton, came on from Woodville on Wednesday with Adelphi and Desert Song. As was instanced in" the ease of- the East Coaster, Bold Front, the pair -were restricted to pace-work on the ..plough. Wallaruh (Nieolson) and Win lock (Murray) were the first to essay fast work, the pair running five furlongs on the plough in lmin 8s»« after leaving the first two furlongs behind in 25 2-ssec. Winlock did not appear to relish her work. Merry Damon (Murray) was sent along at a strong working pace over n couple of : rounds, on the plough, being carried along by Merry Melody (W. Broughton) in the early-stages and by -Wanderlust (A. G. .Campbell). over the final bit. . The Cup jStiViidate ran his first six furlongs in lmin . J2sec, and his last three furlongs ia 43 •8-ssec. . . . La Parleuse (A. C. Dick) had Foghorn, " a two-year-old bay filly "by Cape Horn from the Boniform mare Bonrina, as a partner over half a mile on the courEe proper, the pair coming home in. 56 l-sscc. Top Flyer (Murray), a Hunting Song .gelding—a half-brother to Merry Damon — and Miladi- were partners over. five furlongs to Tun lmin 12sec outside the flags on the course proper. Dobbin (Vincent) and Patearoa (Pagan) .- were practically on terms at the end of half a mile on the plough in 52 2-ssec. '.Airforce, Warzone^ and Acred were restricted "to solid work on the plough, the trio coming home from the five-furlong post in ]mm ]2 4-ssec. ■"Skyrider ■(M'.Dowell) .van kept back to :.Pahu (X, Voirre) in the parly stages of a mile task on the -course -proper, but she hung on to beat him home. They ran
tlie first two furlongs in 27 1-osec, three in 41sec, and five in Imin 7 1-osec. Fahu lias done little galloping since his return from Riccarton, but is steadily improving. Skyrider will not run on the opening day at Awapuni. Aeredity (L. Gray) surprised by beating Keddar (K. Voitre) home quite comfortably after running a mile on the course proper* in Imin oOsec, the first two furlongs having been left behind in 27 2-ssec, and the half-mile in 54 2-osec. Pythia (W. Broughton), alone, ran five furlongs on the plough in Imin 9sec, while Make Up (W. S. Taylor) and a companion were travelling easily to run the same distance hi Imin 13see. Pushed along, Myola (Faulkiner) hung on to lead Thrasher (K. Voitre) past the post at the close of a four-furlong scamper which was run in 52 4-ssec, but the Hunting Song two-year-old was doing it well. Coon Song (K. Voitre) jumped oft between the five and six furlong posts to run five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec on the course proper. He left the first furlong behind in 11 4-osec, and the first two in 25 3-5 sec, but was slowing up in the straight. Sporting Chance (Nicolson) and Rule Britannia (R. Boyd) recorded a very satisfactory effort when they ran five furlongs in lmiu 6sec after takinc'l3 1-osec for the initial furlong. Both will go to Waipukurau for Boxing Day. .~. , , Sailing (Shirkey), White Squall (Dick), and Thermopylae (Shand) were sent the reverse way on the course proper. They jumped off at the winning post to run three furlongs in 30 2-ssec. Sailing was holding the advantage over AVhite Squall at the' finish. ' ' ... La Poupetf (Bromley) and Chief" Cook (C. Broughton) were likewise sent over three furlongs, the reverse way. Chief Cook had the- inside running, and had slightly the better of the jump, out,, but the filly had her head in front at the finish after running 38 4-ssec, a good effort, for both had good weights, up. The pair will leave for Auckland to-morrow night. THE JUMPERS. Mister Gamp (R. C. Miles) and Brilliant Light (H. Gordon) negotiated four flights of hurdles at a fast pace. Both fenced cleanly, but Mister Gamp drew clear over the* final stages. Callamart (A. G. Campbell) and Atareria (A. M'Donald) were restricted to a bout over three fences, the pair giving a very fair display although the pace was not on. Evening Hero (C. Robinson) showed too much pace in his fencing for Braggart (R. C. Miles), but he was restrained throughout. The latter, while he clouted one panel hard, shows promise for a novice. Otairi (A. M'Donald) and Democratic (A. E. Stratton) were given an easy task, being required to negotiate only three fences, but they both revelled in their work. GENERAL. Arrow Lad is definitely stated to be a runner at Awapuni, his connections having decided to forego the -Auckland trip. Spearmiss is another who will not make the Auckland trip, and she will take her place in the Manawatu Cup field, when she will be ridden by the local apprentice, W. J. M'Dowell. The connections of Bold Front have made overtures for the services of L. Faulkiner, an apprentice of R. E. Hatch's. While he has had only one ride in a race, this boy lias displayed ability on the training track. The lady trainer, Mrs. A. M'Donald, who underwent an operation in October, made her reappearance at the tracks this morning, being warmly, welcomed by -her fellow trainers. A three-year-old chestnut filly by Tea Tray from that well-known brood mare Blackada, has been taken in hand by R. E. Hatch. Bred by Mr. R. A. M'Kenzie, or Milson's Line, she is a splendid roomy sort. Like her elder half-brother, Novar, she boasts a white blaze. Another newcomer to Awapuni is a Weathervane—Miss Elliee two-year-old filly who is quartered in Mrs. M'Donald's stable. A big, but well mannered, sort, the youngster claims relationship on her distaff side with I'har Lap, the maternal fourth dam of each being the Adventurer mare Miss Kate. | RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Manawatu Meet- | ing:— . H. Gordon: Novar. C. Goulsbro': Pahii. W. H. Jones: Spearopa. R. C. Miles: Mister Gamp. A. M'Donald: Democratic.
