A BRUTAL OFFENCE

SIX YEARS' HARD LABOUR

For rape at Maslerton, William Williams, a, young man, was sentenced to six years' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr. Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court to-day. "This is a particularly brutal, callous, and violent offence on a little girl of six," said his Honour, addressing the prisoner. "You are a man of bad character with convictions for theft against you. I was wondering whether I ought to order you to be flogged as part of your sentence. It ifi what you thoroughly deserve. But I have, decided not to do that, i am going to inflict a long term of imprisonment. This sort of thing cannot be tolerated in the community."
