VICE-REGAL VISIT

CLUB RIFLE SHOOTING-' RECORD"

NELSON, 15th December.

The nine-roomed house on the Maori Pa estate, owned and occupied by Mr. R. W. Stephens, has been destroyed by five. The building, an old landmark, was insured for £1000 in the South British ' Office, and the contents were covered, by a policy of £100 in the same office. Kifle Club held a competition at Wakapuaka range over 300, 500, and 600 yards seven shots and two optional sighters at each range. The winner was Eifleman II flSffrt °fl PUtu° n a fiDe total of 98 off the rifle—the standard. The weather conditions, were perfect for shooting, and aT™ Vely, were 'registered. At 300 yards Itiflemen Batehelor, • Barnett, Inwood, and Searle each secured 33 one point over the standard. At 500 yards, President V. Sharland.and Kifleruan S. Barnett each missed the possible 35 by one point, the former with his first counter and the latter with his last shot. The shooting at this range was exceptionally good. At 600 yards, the most difficult range, Rifleman If. Prank missed the possible 35 by one point, his "second to last shot being just outside the centre ring. Eifleman K. Inwood secured. 33 at this range—one point over the standard, Jtifleman H. Frank, C. Batchelor, C Marsh, S. Barnett, and X.. Inwood take 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 points respectively for the Wastney Cup. What is probably the club record, was put up when ten men scored an average o£ 95 points. It is quite safe to say that this score is easily the highest since the introduction of Mark VII. ammunition. ,->■. ■ Mr. IT. C. Cullen, stationmaster in charge of the Nelson section of the railways, who is transferring., .to Picton shortly, was entertained by members of the staff at a smoke concert. His Excellency will attend the Rotary Club's luncheon, and at 3 p.m. will distribute the college prizes. Later a visit will be made to the Marsden. estate at Stoke. On Thursday morning a visit will be paid to the Central School and to the Cawthron Institute, and in the afternoon, as guests of the Cawthron Institute Their Excellencies will visit farms and orchards. The night will be spent at; Motueka, where a conversazione will be held. On Friday morning an address will be given to the Motueka school children, after which the Vice-Regal party ■ will leave for Takaka. The remainder of the day. will be spent in the district,_ and a return will be made to Nelson in time for departure by the evening's boat for Wellington, j. , A deputation consisting of the directors of the Permanent Building Society waited on the Nelson City Council on- Saturday evening in connection with the council's decision to raise a loan of £28.000 for improvements to the gasworks locally. It was pointed out that.it would not be advantageous to the prosperity.. of the town to take £28,000 out of it and send Home a good part of it to pay tor plant. If such a large amount of money were tied up for a term of years it would put out of circulation money used locally tor the building of houses.
