CAPSIZED IN SQUALL

NAVAL RESERVISTS' MISHAP

Members of the Wellington Division of the Royal Volunteer Naval Reserve had a narrow escape from drowning on Saturday afternoon when the whaler in which they were sailing was struck by a heavy squall about a mile off Pipitea Point, and they were thrown into the sea. The accident happened when the boat was putting about. Just as she was turning she was hit on the broadside by a sea which buried her to the gunwales. Four men were carried under the boat by the sail, but they were able to struggle clear as the boat shifted. After turning over twice, the whaler floated keel uppermost. Eight pf the crow managed to scramble on top of her, but four others drifted away from the boat. The accident had been noticed from the shore, and the Harbour Board launch Hnia, and the launch Tana from the boat harbour, under Mr. ¥. Prince, went to their rescue. After being picked up, the men were taken to the wharf police station, where they were served with hot- drinks by Messrs. W. Peters and Allan Gardner, of the crew of the Kohi. Petty-Officer Cox and Leading Seaman Buck were taken to the |lospital, but they have since been discharged.
