UNEMPLOYED MEETING

(By Telegraph.)

POLICE USE TACT

(Special to "The Evening Post.") CHIUSTCHUECH, sth December. "IJ: the polico vant trouMo they'll get it." . . . "Bring out the ninemen iv the polico barracks, with batons, and we'll bring out 900 batons." . . . "We'll fight them fist"for fist." These were somo of the threats heard from a crowd of tho unemployed outside the City Council chambers early this afternoon. It was chiefly due to the tact shown by the police that a probable clash was avoided. A section of tho unemployed, in which the Communist clement was apparent, endeavoured during tho morning to hold a meeting in front of the labour bureau, but tho police refused to allow it. The men adjourned to Victoria Square, and subsequently marched to the Council Chambers. It was when the police gathered round the leaders that some of the men seemed inclined to welcome trouble by making provocative remarks. After some argument, it was decided to adjourn to Cathedral Square to hold a meeting. The meeting was held, although no permit had been obtained. "As fast as the 'cops' pull down one speaker, let another one get up; let them run in the lot of us." was the admonition of the spokesman. "If we don't get a job within two* days we'll take action, and it will bo proper revolutionary action," declared another speaker. Tho police stood aside and allowed the speakers free play, but after the. arrival of an inspector the meeting was quietly broken up by the guardians of law and order. A reply has been received by tho Mayor from tho Governor-General to> the request on behalf of the unemployed that work should be provided for them. His Excellency expresses his sympathy with those who are unemployed, and states that he is bringing the matter under the notice of Ministers immediately.
