SUNSHINE AT KICCARTON
Beautiful frocks of ninou^and chiffon, less elaborate but -equally attractive dresses of crepe do chine and satin, smart suits and ensembles of featherweight tweed and wool crepe, all ap-' pcarcd to advantage on the lawn at Eiecartou on Monday, when tlic ■weather was perfect for Derby Day (states the Christehurch "Press"). Very striking were the patterned frocks of filmy materials, in beautiful colourings, generally of flora] design, often with blurred outlines, and all made with very long, full skirts. Generally speakiug the more substantial" tile material the shorter the skirt. Straw hats in black-'or in blight colouis, bomctimes raised oft the forehead on tiny bandeaux, were charming accompaniments to tho dainty flocks; but felt hats, remained high in favour, probably because of the flattering line given by a sbit brim. Mis. 11. A. Knight, wife of the chairman, wore a navy geoigette coat^over a navy ciepo do chine froi-k, finished with a rhinestone buckle at tho waist, and a navy straw hat. She was accompanied by,'her daughtcit., Mrs. Alistcr Deans, wcaiing a black !md white patterned satin frock and black hat tiimmed with white camellias; Mrs. J. W. Woodhousc, wearing a navy wool georgette cardigan suit and wide navy straw hat; and Mrs. George Aitken, who wore ■an attractive frock of brown crepe de chine patterned in limc-giecin and primrose, wide panamalac hat in. two shades of brown. Among others present wcie: Mrs. Edward Kiddiford (Hutt), black and white spotted crepo de chine frock under black fur-trimmed coat, black Bangkok hat with flat silver iloweis; Mrs. T. H. .Lowry, wineberry-rod cloth frock, black hat trimmed with \ black eire ribbon and touches of grey; Mrs. O. S. Watkins, sapphire blue lace frock, navy straw hat banded with sapphire blue; Lady Myers (Wellington), lark-spur-blue patterned chiffon frock, black frilled georgette cape, blue straw hat; Mrs. Stephen Gibbons (India), wine-red cloth ensemble and red felt jial; Mrs. Edgar Stead, pretty georgette frock in^ two shades of green in blurred .design/ lace collar, leaf green- s.traw hat; Mrs. Hector ltolleston (England), fiock and coat of patterned ninon in autumn colouring, wide bro-wn straw hat; Mrs. C. M. Turrell (Wellington), brown and mastic patterned crepe do chine frock under a seal coat, brown straw hat banded with brown and mastic; Mrs. Arthur Elworthy, mastic and amber patterned crepe de chiDC frock, trimmed with plissi frills, black Bangkok hat; Mrs. P. F. M'Evedy (Wellington), black georgette frock,'with corsage of black, red, and white patterned georgette, wide black hat, lined with red; Mrs. Dudley Kettle "(Napier), ■very smart frock of bottle green crepolla, small black hat; Mrs. E-ussell Giaoe (Wanganui), brown georgette and lace frock, brown hat 'With ; chou of brown and whito spotted ribbon on the side; Miss Nance Grace (Wanganui), navy and ivory boldly patterned niuon frock, navy and ivory straw hat banded with navy and white spotted ribbon; Lady Ward, larkspur blue and grey flecked ensemble, blue stitched hat to match; Mrs. Bernard Wood (AVellington), black velvet coat trimmed with grey fur over a navy crepe de chine frock, navy straw hat; Hon.' Helen St. John, osier green frock, small black lac© straw hat, inset with bands of felt; Miss 'D. Herbert (Wellington), daffodil crepo do chine flecked with black, black velvet coatee, small black hat; Miss Gwladys Gaisford, black georgette boldly patterned in grey and daffodil yellow, wide black hat.
There was a large attendance of children, accompanied by parents,. at the performance of the play "The Toymakers' Dream," by pupils of Miss Hazel Martin, at Kirk-caldie's tearoom recently. Tho little onc3 thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
