SPEEDWAY SEASON
OPENING ON SATURDAY,
Oue of the principal events at tlie official opening of the speedway season at the Kilbirnie Stadium ,on Saturday night ■will be a Big Nine Scratch, decided under conditions similar to those which 'accounted' for some of the.most stirring and thrilling contests last season. The "Big Nine" on Saturday night will be: H. Durkin and E. Hamberger (Australia),' H. Maugham (■who returned from England recently), and T. Wilkinson, C. Tonks, W. B. Harvie, E. Naylor, P. M'Ghee, and B. Palmer. Durkin is one of the leading lights on Australian tracks, one of his most recent successes of note' being" a decisive win in a big event at the opening of the new track, in -which world's records have lately been established. Hamberger is also credited with some outstanding performances. Mangham competed' here last season, and was runner-up in the New Zealand championship. His performances are likely to be even better as a result of further experience overseas. Wilkinson; in a special race at the trials last Saturdaj', improved upon his fast times of last season. It is likely, therefqi*, that a very high standard of performance will be_ registered at Saturday's opening meeting, not only in the Big Nine Scratch. (from a rolling start), but also in the other events, in each of which four heats and two semifinals will be. necessary before the final ig reached. The Big Nine will be decided in three heats and.a final. Other information regarding the meeting is published elsewhere in this issue. The two Australian riders, Desfcin a«d Hambetger, arrived from Australia, via Auckland, this morning.
