MONEY FOR WIDENING
WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
A tempting offer was recently made by the Government to the Petone Borough Council to assist in the relief of unemployment. The Koro Koro district is badly in need of better access, and the Government offered to-find £1700 to widen, the present.road if the balance of £800 was-contributed by'Petohe. . The Petone Council. considered that the Koro Koro district should agree to being specially rated in order to cover the interest costs of Petone's contribution, but at a meeting convened last night by the Koro Koro Progressive League it was decided not to follow this course but. to undertake, to pay .the same rates as are paid by the rest of Petone. The. Koro Koro district is at present exempt from certain- rates for services which it does not directly enjoy. Its rate is 6 17-32 din the £ on unimproved value, as against approximately 9d in the & over the rest of Petone. ' - . .- By submitting to the increased rates the Koro Koro people hope to get from the Petone Borough Council their share j of the money necessary to widen the Koro Koro road to 18ft, and more at the corners. Of the £.800 required to be found by tho district tho Labour Party in Petone has collected between i £250 and £300, leaving from £500 to j £550 to be supplied by the council. The proposal will be conveyed to the Petone Borough Council through the Koro Koro Committee, which is composed of members of the council and of Koro Koro people. The council meets on Monday next, and, assuming it is agreeable to Koro Koro's proposal, the work on the road will commence one day next week. It has been definitely decided that none but Petone unemployed shall be taken on;
