UNGRATEFUL MAN
THEFT FROM WASHHOUSE
■ Yesterday afternoon James Ward, 43, and Biehard Henry O 'Connell, .50, | called on a house at 38, Elliee street, said that they were hungry, and were given a meal. When they had gone Miss E. Bouse, who had given them refreshments, discovered that two towels, .were missing from the washhouse. Giving evidence in the Magistrate's Court to-day Constable Graham said that he saw the two accused walking together. Ward was carrying a .parcel. : When he asked Ward what it contained, he said that it was his laundry. After being questioned further, Ward admitted stealing the contents of the parcel—two. towels valued at 6s 6d, from a private house. ''I sjfis alone yesterday afternoon when the men called and said that they were hungry, and asked for something to eat," said Miss Bouse. Miss Bouse stated that she had tried to keep the men under observation when she was preparing the meal, but one man sitting on the washhouse steps was just out of vision. .When the men had gone she found that two towels that had been on the copper had disappeared. Ward (from the dock): '<O'Connell had nothing to do with it." In sentencing Ward to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, Mr. E. Page, S.M., said, that there was a possibility that the two men had been working together. The tangible evidence was only against Ward, however, and O'Connell would have to be given the benefit of the doubt. ■The charge against O'Connell was dismissed. . ■■'.'-. ■■-."■'
