VISIT TO WELLINGTON
ENTERTAINMENTS PLANNED
The question o£ entertaining the Nether-, lands Naval Squadron, which is due at Wellington from Australia on- 17th October, was discussed at yesterday's ; meeting of the Wellington Branch of the Navy; League. . It was stated that, subject to satisfactory financial help from the Government and the City Council, the league hoped to run a sports meeting "at the Basin Reserve on Monday, ■ 20th October, for the non-commissioned officers and men of the squadron. A letter from the City Council stated that a grant of' £25 towards the cost of refreshments. etc., would be made by the council. The Government, however, said the secretary, Mi-. JR. Darroch, .had stated through an officer of the Internal Afiairs Department that it could not assist the league in paying for the sports meeting. Members said that unless the Government- helped the' league it could not go on with the meeting,-as the council's, donation was insufficient. The'suggestion was made that the league could make direct representations to the Minister of Internal Affairs, .but it was decided- to hold the matter over until anotHei' meeting was held on Friday, when, it was hoped, there would be a better, attendance.
On the evening of 20th October a. balL is to.be given by the Navy League to the admiral and officers of the squadron, and to the officers of H.M.S. Dunedin, in ,tbe Adelphi Cabaret. The. Mayor (Sir. G..A. Troup) v.-rote regretting that because''he had a previous engagement he could not be present at the. ball. . As it. was arranged that twenty officers were to be taken for a drive round the city in the afternoon of 20th October, he could not be present at the sports meeting..1 ' A letter received from the Town Clerk stated that the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall would be open for the use of the men o£ the squadron during the.day land evening o£ 17th October and on. the I evening of 18th October.
