AIRPORTS
DEVELOPMENT IW U.S.A,
(By Telegraph.) {Special to "The Evening Post") AUCKLAND, 29th September. Practically evwy municipality of any consequence in-the .United. States now has its airport, stated Mr. E P.. Howara Trade Commissioner m tho United States, who arrived in Auckland. lastweek'from Los Angeles by the stoamer Golden Cloud. Mr. Howai;.! intends staying three.'weeks in Jv-.v Zoalaud before going to .the Oricnl. ulievu he will iuvestigato matters relating to air transport. ' ■ "There are 1000 or move airports now operating, an'a'a'"furtlier 1400 are cou- ;■ teinplated,* 3; Mr. Howard said. "Some are conducted privately, and others by corporations and municipalities. Development has boon, almost breath-taking, _ as iffiQ or three years ago commercial "air transport was really just beginning;. Most of tho airports are under municipal control, the actual department depending upon the organisation of the .city government. There is usually some "sort of advisory 1: oaru of. aqronautical menlto which the controlling body may refer. One very successful airport was put under the jurisdiction of the Port Commission, d body-similar to a harbour board in New Zealand, the general superintendent being the harbour'engineer. It is expected that the airport will have paid for itself in seven years. "It is almost impossible to give any idea of how things have developed. Tho United States is now criss-crossed with air linos, and there are now several- routes across the continent. Air . lines arc privately owned, and there is no such thing ;as a direct Government subsidy, :ev.en. for. mail services,, which »re.conducted by private contractors."
