THE SEASON OPENS
CLUB ACTIVITIES
Many lawn tennis clubs in and around Wellington opened the season on Saturday. AT KHANDALLAH. The Khandallah Club's new pavilion was opened by Mr. J. C. Peacock, president of ' *ihe Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. : The president, Mr. A. B. Gibbons, briefly traced' the history of the club, stressing ■ its financial stability, particularly, as , he humorously said, in the matter of the . liew pavilion. In 1909, lie said, the old. pavilion was overturned by the wind, a thing which he did not think could possibly happen to the new pavilion. Mr. Peacock congratulated members on their club spirit, the advance they had - made in the number of courts, and valuable asset in their new pavilion. The Khandallah Club, he said, was fit to take its .place with* any of the senior clubs in ' Wellington so far as equipment and facihties for play were concerned. He praised "the interest in the club and the selfreliance of the members, which, he said, ■was not peculiar to the K.handallah_ Club, but appeared in most of the clubs in the ■Wellington district. • Exhibition games were played by N. R. C. Wilson, D. G. France, A. L. France, and D. Dobie. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. The pavilion is equipped to meet all the requirements of members, having dressingrooms, and lockers, and a room for the preparing, and .serving of teas. LYALL BAY CLUB. There was a large attendance of visitors at Lyall Bay, where the season was opened by Mr. A. E. Wells, the president. Mr. Wells, who was introduced by the chairman of the club committee, Major Nicholls, extended a welcome to the 15 or 20 new members. He drew attention to the fact that fences had been repaired, .and new' nets secured, all for the benefit of members. Be had been pleased to hear that several of the new members would undoubtedly prove' an acquisition to the club by reason of the excellent standard of their play. Declaring the courts open, he hit the first ball over the net, after ■which afternoon tea was served by members of tho committee. RAWHITI CLUB. „ At the Rawhiti Club, which has two 1 courts and- fifty members, Mrs. Bell opened the.season. Among those present were Mr. R. Simpson, chairman of the Mount s Cook School Committee; Mr. Stevens, secretary of the Mount Cook School Committee; Messrs. H. R. Baigent, and W. B. Watson, of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association Management Committee. WESLEY CLUB. The three courts of the Wesley Club, which adjoins those occupied by the RawHiti Club, were opened by the Rev. E. D. Patchett, senior minister of the Welling- ' ton Methodist Church Circuit. This club "•■' has recently become affiliated to the Wellington L.T.A. Mr. Patchett, who was introduced by "Mr. W. E. Howe, wished the club a sue- ■' cessful season, and a full membership. • TECHNICAL COLLEGE CLUB. TTie' five courts which are used by the Technical. College Club were opened by Mr. W. H. Howell, principal of the college. He stated that next season, when all'the buildings of the college were completed, the club would probably have nine courts.., He was glad to know that the standard, of play among members was iinprovingl He' hit the first ball over the net. Afternoon tea was served in the cafe- •.: teiia. ■,•■;: , . • . f: TALAVERA CLUB. t The ppening of the season of the Talavef a Club took the form of a Yankee tournament. . There were about thirty players present;' The winners of the tourney were Mr. King and Miss M'Tver.' VICTORIA CLUB. The ..Victoria Tennis CJub opened its season 'in the presence of a large number, of members and friends. , Mr. W. E. Jackson, president of the club, performed the ■ ceremony; and congratulated "members "on ;_■ the past successful season. After having presented the championship cups to the winners, he called upon Miss Jackson to I. eerve the first ball, and the courts were v. then--declared open. Jl..Exton; junior, Miss O'Connor. Men: Senior, Mr. F. W Mackay junior, Mr. H. Wickens. VICTORIA COLLEGE CLUB. There was a large attendance of members at the opening of the Victoria University College Club, when a Yankee tournament was held.
