A "First Night."

There was hardly a vaeaut seat in tlic Town Hall ou Saturday evening, when Jan Kubclik, the famous violinist, gave tho first of his three local programmes. In the front row was Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe and a party from Government House. Lady Bledisloo was wearing a frock of geranium red, over which she wore a handsome coat of gold and many coloured brocade, with a sable collar. Accompanying her were Mrs. Cecil Day (who wore a black frock, and a cape of rose panne velvet), and Miss Isabel Gillespie (in a frock of powder blue floral chiffon and a cloak of deeper blue panno velvet). Mr. Cecil Day was also in tho party. Among the audience were Sir Michael Myers; Mr. Justice Kennedy, the Hon. Mrs. Ralph Vane, Mr. and Miss Lorna Donne, Mrs. W. Prouse, Dr. Morice, Dr. Stout, Lady Egberts, Dr. and Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. T. Young, Mr. and Mrs. Alec. Young, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Nathan, Mrs. C. M. Malfroy, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hayden, Miss Butts, Misses M'Keown, Miss Berry, Commander and Mrs. Webster, Mrs. and Miss Alison Kirkcaldie, Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Doctor, Mr. de Mauny, Mrs. Salmon, Mrs. Dalziell, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Barker, Mr. and Mrs. G-. Pearce, and Miss Putnam. Mothers' Union. Beautiful weather favoured the meeting of the Eastbourne Mothers' Union with the pleasant result that there was a good attendance of members'and friends, all of whom spent a very cheerful afternoon. Mrs. Kaine (wife of the vicar) spoke on. the subject of "Caretakers," showing that nio.th.ers were the caretakers of the family and home, responsible to God for- their work, and specially for the souls of the children. After the address Mrs. Eainc led some good community singing, with Mrs. Carter accompanying. Tea brought, a pleasant afternoon to a elosti. ■ . An Unveiling Ceremony. A large congregation at St. Barnabas's Church, Khanclallah, ■ yesterday morning testified to the esteem which the late Miss Margaret Page had won by her personal worth and by her twenty-four years' service as honorary organist to the church. A tablet to her memory, placed, by her fellow-wor-shippers, was unveiled and dedicated by the vicar, the Rev. E. M. Cowie. M.A. The congregation included members of Miss Page's family and others who had been associated witli her in her work at St. Mark's school. Ngaio Girl Guides. There was a good attendance of members and friends at a meeting held at Ngaio by the 24th Company Wellington Girl Guides, at which Mr. Guy presided. The report and- balance-sheet showed a very satisfactory state of work carried out and money iv hand, specially considering that the company had not been long in existence. Groat credit was given to the leaders of tho Guides and Brownies for the work they had done with thefr companies. The retiring committee was re-elected, with the addition of four new members. Votes of sympathy were passed to the relatives of a very promising young Guide and "Tawny "o>vi,'? Christina Flora Hills, who passed away recently; also to Mrs. Hioka, a member of the eomniittee who had also suffc.reel a bereavement. It whs soiisidercd that the first annual meeting was a very successful and encouraging one. Petone Free Kindergarten. Much pleasure was expressed afc a meeting of tlic Pctone Free Kindergarten Committee at the number of acceptable gifts recently sent in. These included two hobby-horses (the work and gift of Mr. Pattern), a rockinghorse from Mr. Dales, dolls' furniture and "pushing" toys from Mrs. Dickson and Mr. Neil, and some records from Mr. Isaacs. It was stated that Mrs. Wallace Sterling, B.Sc, had consented to give a talk on "Hygiene" to tho Mothers' Club, and the hope was expressed that -all mothers interested would attend 4lin meeting. Tho c}ub is now working for a gift stall to be held iv November, and it was decided to hold a jumble sale at an earlier date. Mrs. Cook presided, nt the meeting. Dance at lyall Bay. The Lyall Bay Home and School Association held a most successful dance in the Katea Hall on Saturday evoning. Over 70 couples were present and everybody seemed in a happy mood. Dancing continued until midnight under the direction of Mr. G. F. Hodgman as M.C. There were novelty dances, including "Monte Carlo" and a. "Streamer waltz," the latter with the lights dimmed, and a spot light had a very pretty effect. Prizes were awarded Miss Phyllis Noad and Mr. Jas. Eobb (Monte Carlo), while the winner of the special competition prize (a handsome handworked raffia bag donated by Miss Roberts) was Mrs. Hope B. Gibbons. Miss Mac Christie pleased all with her two songs, and the extras played by Miss M. Hunter were much appreciated. After the supper interval Miss Beatrice Mehaffey and Mr. Jos. Colledge gave an interesting demonstration of nfodern ballroom dancing, which included a waltz, quick-step, and the new Slow Fox-trot. Miss Mehaffey was afterwards presented with a handsome "confectionery" bouquet. Among tli'oso present were Mr. F. W. Boyd (president of the association), and Mrs. Boyd, Mr. H. M. Harris (chairman of school committee) and Mrs. Harris, Mr. O. Al. Banner (headmaster) and Mrs. and Miss Banner. The excellent music supplied added greatly to the enjoyment of the dancers. The supper arrangements were successfully carried out by the vice-president (Mrs. D. W. Olson) and ladies' committee. After the function the executive committee unanimously voted a donation of d£ls to the school committee for special purposes. An Appreciation. Miss Noonan, acting-matron, and Miss finnane, sub-matron^'of Porirna Mental Hospital, were entertained by a number of friends at tho Pioneer Club on Friday afternoon, in recognition of their unfailing kindness and consideration extended alike to relatives, patients, and visitors. The official visitors to the hospital expressed their appreciation of the efficiency shown during the period they occupied the positions mentioned. A very pleasant afternoon was spent.
