TECHNICAL EDUCATION

POLICY OF DEPARTMENT

An allegation that the Department of Education was neglecting tho tech-! nical side of education was made in the House of Representatives yester J day afternoon by Mr. C. H. Chapman (Labour, Wellington North). Mr; Chapman said that a change of Gov-'. ernmout had not brought a change of attitude in the Department in regard to technical education, and instead of advancing this branch of education the Department was hindering it. He instanced eases in which the Wellington Board of Governors had been hampered by the unsympathetic treatment of its requests by the Department. In reply,: the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) said that: he was sure Mr. Chapman must bo under a misapprehension, because the I Department and he were doing all that was possible to foster technical education. In the'Hutt Valley a day technical school had been established, and Cabinet at the present time was considering tho grant for an extra workshop there. He recognised that the! Hutt Valley was destined to become the greatest industrial centre in New Zealand. Judged by the number of building permits, its growth was exceeded only by the cities of Auckland and Wellington. There had been a financial difficulty in extending tho: Wellington Technical School, but this had now been met.
