HAWKES BAY HUNT CLUB
A DOUBLE TO POSTMAN
TOTiLfSATOR FIGURES DOWX
The annual meeting oE the Hawkes Boy Huufc Club took place on Saturday last at Hastings. ■ JJcspits ideal climatic conditions tho attendance was small, and the totalisator figures showed a decline of about ) i i tent 111 lin o%c Tie i 1i c I -ii H 1 i iin t £ 7 1 t cii Jl \ ill 1c di int in, to nc us id Ii I H b ihn 1 undPi tl ( brlt i Itl f j foun Itl flu II V in in Ihm t II racing v. s jir«.t cl «? nd the i tt tr\ I for ftn early snrinf: mrcting si m splci dil cocditun Dunnft fh= runn ng v^jg Hnici By Oni Cud, Hishw^niai,
who carried top weight, and led for a mile, broke a bone in a leg, and had to be destroyed. RIVERSLEA HURDLES. Postman was installed a short '•'oddson" favourite for the Riverslea Hunters' Hurdles. Konaki was the early leader from Postman and Tamworth. The last%amed took charge going out of the straight, but Postman joined him with half a mile to go. At the last jump, Tall Timber challenged, and appeared a probable winner. but Postman finished best to beat Tall Timber by two lengths, Tamworth one and a half lengths away third. Konaki a poor fourth. Even for hunters the class was very' moderate, and although Postman won, lie was not the certainty the betting suggested. Tall Timber, ran quite a fair race, and had he been as well handled as the winner.he may,' have, reversed positions with him. Tamworth wasprominent for a time, but the others made a poor showins. : ■' '"."■■■- PARK HACK HURDLES. AH four runners in the .Park Hack Hurdles .found. fair support, Whakaue being favourite. High Heather was the early pacemaker, but a bad jump at the end of a mile cost him the lead, Whakaue -taking charge, -and thereafter having matters Ms own way to eventually win by two and a half lengths from High Heather, with Handy eight Jengths further back in third place. i Whakaue showed improved form, but his task was made easy by the erratic fencing of High Heather. Considering the- weakness of doss and numbers Whakaue paid a remarkably good dividend. OKAWA MAIDEN PLATE. In an improved totalisator pool Commandant was installed favourite tor the Okawa" Maiden Plate, but his total was "only £18 more'than the amount invested on Acmil, while Lady Spy and Sympathetic claimed good support. From a good barrier position, Commandant was quickest to begin. Sympathetic, Lady Spy, and Acmil also begaii well. Commandant and Aemilled into the straight irom Black Acre, Laconic, Lady Spy, and Sympathetic. In a great race Tip the straight Acmil appeared to. have Commandant beaten, but the latter by a fine effort just won in.the last stride. Laconic was a close third, and Lady, Spy. a moderate fourth. '■■.■'■- '■•..'-., ,- Smartness from the barrier plus good class were points that- favoured Commandant. He showed rare gameness over the final stages. The well-seasoned- Acmil

ran her best race. As she was well placed1 throughout,' no excuse for her defeat can be offered. Possibly, the unlucky runner was Laconic, who.came from a long, way back. Sympathetic went well while his condition lasted. . HUNT CLUB CUP- v Eisk was the choice of backers'in the Hunt Club Cup, but Highwayman was also well supported. Highwayman, Brightstone, Kovno, and Eisk was the order over the first mile, at which point Highwayman broke down and Brightstone fell. Kovno then took charge, and was still in front of Eisk and King's Counsel at the final obstacle. Once over, Eisk joined Kovno. and, staying better, won by two lengths, Kovno; beating King's Counsel by four lengths. Torch was a poor fourth. Eisk was patiently ridden by H. Gordon, and this helped him to defeat Kovno. A lot of use was made of Kovno, and he only -weakened in the last fifty yards. Highwayman was going well at the time of his mishap, but little can be written in favour of the other competitors. ABBOTSFORD HANDICAP. Royal Damon Was installed s, decided favourite for the Abbotsford Handicap, Don Quixote being the only other starter seriously backed. Boyal Damon was actually first away from the barrier, but Shrewd soon went to the lead, and at the straight entrance was well clear of Royal Damon, Queen's Choice, sad Bernera. Bidden right out, Shrewd beat Eoyal Damon by half a length, Chopin a short neck away, followed closely by Queen's Choice and Don Quixote. As Shrewd has been sprinting well in his work, his traiuer expected him to at least run prominently, but his brilliancy surprised the majority oE regular racegoers. Eoyal Damon again ran a solid race, and can be elasaed as an unlucky gelding. Chopin and Queen's Choice both performed creditably, while Don Quixote did not disgrace himself. SOUTRA HUNTERS' FLAT. Although Postman was a pronounced favourite for the Soutra Hunters' .Flat, his supporters drew quite a good dividend, due to his four opponents all coming in for fair support. High Heather led past the stands from Glassioiigh and Blackpool, but with four furlongs to go Tall Timber and Postman were raced to the front to enter the straight on terms. Over the final stages a good struggle for supremacy ended in Postman beating Tall Timber by half a length. High Heather was another two lengths away, and 'Blackpool a bad fourth. HORONUi HACK. less than fifty tickets divided C4aupat, Arrowhead, aud Henry of Navarre in the betting on the Horonui Hack. Cloyne began smartly to lead away from the tapes, but Eepay was soon in front, and at the half-mile post was attended by Cloyne, Arrowhead, and Evening Hero. Bating into the straight, Eepay was right out from the field, but she had to be vigorously ridden to beat Kahikatoa by half a neck, with Arrowhead only a short head away and Ganpat fourth.
While Repay just won, she cannot be described as lucky, as she showed a lot of speed in the' early stages. Kahikatoa came from a long way back. Better placed in the early stages, he must have won. Arrowhead ran an excellent race, and was
well ridden by H. Gray, so was beaten on his merits, but Ganpat had not the best of luck.
