JRuxely has thoro been a weaker field Jij a jumping race (it Ellcrslie than thnt ■ jjfhich contested the Grcrnmount Hunters' Steeplechase at the Pakuranga Hunt yjub's Meeting on Saturday, the class be'sng very poor. On the strength of creditwile track work, i'reyja. -was installed a good favourite, but after having every ohanee she was jyell beaten by ScaraIfponche, who returned a double-figure dividend. Scararaouehe ran to the lead in tho last round, and stalling oil' si challenge itom Freyja, won by three lengths, with Jipvely Boy a poor third and Marila fourth. 'Absent, who'lost his rider at the iirsfc fence, went on riderless and proved a nuisance to tho others by running across several of the fences. There was nearly some trouble at the last fence, where theriderfcfjs Foxhound ran light across Freyja and Scaramouche. HARRSS MEMORIAL, Backers wanted T?ennyplain only in the Harris Memorial Hurdles, and he was sent otit a very short-priced favourite, being over three times tie well backed as tlie second choice, Spitlpiko; The summing up oi: backets pro red correct, for Pennyplain led rriosfc of ths way and won in good ijtyla from Spalpiko, who rcachod the front $|fcer crossing the last fence, where Pennyplain made a bad jump. Twiukler was a poor third and Temperature fourth. . They were not a good lot, but the win--386T will win in better company. Spalpiko tjm a good raw, but the others were 4JJ well beaten. Oscar, Cullgie, and Marble Mount all fell SYLVIA PARK HANDICAP. A good pool on Iho Sylvia Park Handicap saw The Sun, Knrpoti, and Cruachan Vept backed. Waimmi -tik! Frothblowcr yf(fe soon in chgrge, and they made play hjr-Cf She straight from Crown Arch, Go,y Cpiihsda, and jUidy Conrfy Waimuri stay- *§, on in fihs wv Ij.om? fcp win by tbr«v

Wild Country tie same distaneri away third-. The"Sun was fourth, followed by Gay ,Cockade and Patutahi. The winner carried 101b overweight, and won well at a good-price. She is a, three-year-old filly by Valkyrian from Waira-rapa,-arid showed promise last season. Lady Opart, "was not well ridden, ami The Sun came from. a. long way back. Karpoti was beaten,'but will hot be discarded for his failure, and should win soon.- .-:. ; JELLICOE HANDICAP. True Blood was agood favourite for the Jeliico'e. Handicap, with Nancy Lee also in demand.. Hannibal and; Desert Glow carried oh the' early running, Hannibal being, in. charge at the half-mile, where Maori. Boy. ran up fast. Hannibal and Maori Boy were first into the straight from Desert' Glow, Barometer, and High Pitch.' ' Near' the distance; High Pitch caught the leaders, and he came on to win by three parts of a length from Pompejus, who finished on well on the outside. Standfast was a neck away third, and Barometers fourth. High Pitch is back to form, and came home really well. Standfast was closer at the finish than. at. any other stage, but Maori Boy, who made his run too soon, faded back t to' fifth.' True Blood was never dangerous; and Nancy Lee received ■a bad passage.' ' ' : ; ' ,- ]. HUNT CUP. What promised' to be a good finish in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup was ruined when Scaramouche fell at the second fence on the hill and brought down St. Warrigal and Mashoor, who were right in his wake at the time. Scaramouche was just leading, with, St.. WarrigaJ, Mashoor, and Spalpiko right up, and after the accident Spalpikq was left with a lead of eight lengths from Odin. Spalpiko was never afterwards troubled to win by four lengths from ■- Odin, who • beat the remounted Mashoor by 150 yards. Freyja was also ill the picture when she fell at the first :raae3 OJS the hill, and ft'was unfortunate $hxt the race was marrda by so many mishaps. ..':.- . ..;...- i The winner is owned, by the popular owner-trainer H. L. Russell, who received aij ovation from his brother trainers when his charge won. Betting on the race was solid, and there was good support for St. Warrigal, the Odin-Freyja bracket, and Mashoor, with: Spalpiko a welj-baek-ed fourth choice. : ...... AUCKLAND HANDICAP* Kosshire was a slightly better favourite than Catoma for the Auckland Handicap, with Trishna also well backed. Vencssa was an early leader, but after two furlongs had been covered Catoma, who was last.for the first furlong, ran through to the lead.' Catoma, Venessa, and Eosshire were the leaders at the turn, where Principal and Sulla were well np. Once into the straight Principal challenged and Catoma had to bo ridden right out to beat him by a neck. Carlaris was four lengths away third, and Arch Eagle fourth. Nest came Trishna and Sir Mond. Catoma was. favoured with a beautiful passage, and would probably have won easier • only for dwelling slightly at the start. Rosshir'e had' every chance, but failed to run on. Principal ran a good race, and Arch Eagle's effort was fairly, promising. .. LADIES' BRACELET. Making his second appearance for the day, Pennyplaia was installed a good favourite for the Ladies' Bracelet, Pall o' the Year and Dominican also being well backed. Pennyplain was soon in front, and he made play into the straight from Fall o' the Year and Dominican. Pennyplain held his owa in the run home and scored by a neck from Dominican, who cut Fall o* the Year out of second by a head. Day Lass was fourth, and Catulus fifth. Pennyplaia woa nicely, and lie will win more money before the season is over, DUNEDIN HANDICAP. The Dunedin Handicap was a good betting race, Chromadyne, Gold Money, and Eoyal Ruler being best backed. Chromadyne liopped out smartly from No. 1 to he joined at the end of two furlongs by Awamutu, who ran through very quickly. Chromadyne and Awamutu were the leaders.into the straight from Sea Cob, Valroe, and Eoyal Ruler, Chromadyne. staying on to gain the verdict by three-quar-ters of a length from Lucy Rose. Sea Cob was a neck away third, and Lady's Boy fourth. Nest came Awamutu and Royal Ruler. ; • Ability .to begin, smartly stood to Chromadyne, who would have won easier with a stronger horseman iv the saddle, Lucy Rose was not prominent until the finish, and_ was unlucky. Chromadyno gave the Waikato sportsman, R. Hannon, his third win of the day, Pennyplain also carrying his colours.
