BOWLING TOURNEY ENDS
NEW ZEALAND THIRD
(Beeeived 23rd August, 11 a.m.)
HAMILTON, 22nd August. The bowling tournament in connection with the Empire Games concluded on Friday afternoon with the singles for the second place between Fielding (New Zealand) and Thorns (South Africa), Thorns winning 21 to 15.
Colquhoun (England) defeated Fielding (New Zealand), 21 to 19.
This was the third straight victory for the Englishman, and gave the third title for British rinks, which already hold the pairs. The singles match, to-say was productive of the best bowling of the week. Colquhoun met his strongest foe in Fielding. During the game the score was tied, and the New Zealauder scored 2 on the twentieth head to go 1 up. Colquhoun laid the first two bowls against kitty, and the third only inches away. Fielding wa» short with the first three. His final was a draw shot well laid, but inchef away from kitty, just behind Colquhoun's third bowl.
Serious disputes threatened to disrupt the Games to-day, with the scullers' nerves badly on edge, due to the postponement of the races because of bad weather. Attempts officially to switch the courses did not meet with general satisfaction. It is rumoured that some of, the contestants, possibly; England and various Canadian entrants, would withdraw, even though the Burlingham course, a few miles from the city, had been definitely fixed. To-night another dispute arose in the Century Dash, which Williams won. The starter, Mr. E. J. Holt, of England, ordered Elliott (New Zealand) out of the race on a second false break. The crowd jeered and the heat was delayed for five minutes, and Elliott restored t» his mark. , B. Pearco (Australia) won the Empire Sculls. Pearce took the lead_ at the half-mile mark. Nearing the finishing line he was rowing easily and smoothly three lengths ahead of Beresford, with Bradley two lengths in tha rear, and "Wright completely out-rowed. Pearce rowed up and down the course after the race. His comment was: "I'nivery pleased to have won. The victory, was worth tho long journey." WRESTLING FINALS.
