Two New Zealand candidates* for the A.J.C. Metropolitan—ln' the Shade and (Jay Crest—were responsible for the best seen at Kandwick this season, when they ran nine furlongs in lmin 59Yisee on the course proper recently. In the Shade had the worst of the weights, as he was piloted by W. Johnstone, whereas the lightweight, F. ligli, was astride Gay Crest. They began smartly, and. ran the first six furlongs in lmin 19sec, and the. mile in lmin 45 sec. The last six occupied lmin ,20sec, and both horses finished full of running.
