• * Bills of exchange and promissory notes were carefully explained by Mr. H. F. yon Haast, M.A., LL.B,, in a lecture delivered at a joint meeting of the New Zealand Bank Officers' Guild and the Wellington Accountant Students' Society (Inc.). Tho lecturer dealt with the main principles of negotiable instruments, and explained the nature of bills of exchange, tho parties, tho negotiations, and the liabilities of the several parties to a bill. Mr. yon Haast explained the holder's legal rights and duties. The- lecture was illustrated by concrete cases, which presented not mere lifeless scraps of paper, but real persons handling documents, and provided machinery that enabled the bargains of .foreign commerce to be arranged in such a manner Hi at the least possible amount of specie need be transmitted from one country to another. ■ At the close of the, lecture n. number if practical questions on banking law and practice were asked by members of the audience. Mr. yon Haast, in a second lecture on 4th September, is to deal with the more complicated aspects of tho subject.
