Qarinthia's Record
Up to date, Carinthia has contested 76 faoes, and his record reads as follows:— 14 'wins, 6 seconds, 14 thirds, and 42 unplaced. In stake money Carinthia has ipon £3900. As he is still a young gelding Carinthia should further improve on his already good record. An Improver. .
The ex-hack, Hannibal, has not had a J^ngthy experience of racing. ■' Last seajjftm was hia first, and he ran ten times. rjuways an attractive galloper, Hannibal ..-won a division of the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie last June, and showed great improvement to finish a, close third to Eager Eoee and Standfast in the chief handicap decided at the Waipa Meeting held late : In June. Since _ that performance Hannibul has gone on improving, and will be one of the prominent runners at Ellerslie next Saturday. Paganelll Resting.
Since his autumn engagements, • Pagabelli has been resting on his laurels under M. J. Carroll's charge at Te^Rapa. The 1/ord Quex —Ringdove gelding is looking yery well at present, and is fairly forward in his preparation. Paganelli's tasks on the tracks have been confined to easy pace work. The gelding's next appearance will probably be at Avondale. : J. H. Lowry's Team. Mr. T. H. Lowry's team of racehorses is now at Greenmeadows, where a stable has been purchased. Under E. Alexander, the horses have.done well. The team in ■work at present comprises Great Charter, Chrysology, Eapallo, Courtesy, Scotland jYard, Commandant, a filly by Night Raid —Miss Hook, a colt by Chief Ruler—Bonrje Briar, jnd a colt by Nigger Minstrel —Silver Grey. The most forward of the team, are Courtesy, who showed smart ibvm last season; Commandant, the Chief Tinier colt, and the Night Raid filly. ComTiiandant is a three-year-old by Legionnaire iVom Bees'in Amber. Did Not Go Far. / The Trentliam-trained Diana's Lad finJslicd up the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting with <i very much damaged reputation as a jumper. He did not go very far in any of his races, and in the AylesImry, Steeplechase he refnsed at the first of the Kennels double, the second fence jpu. the journey, , -
A Disappointment.
Last year,'when, a comparatively young gelding Mister Gamp showed remarkably good form as a hurdler, winning, amongst other important races, the Century Hurdles at Wanganui, and the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie. He also registered a capital performance to* carry 10.13 into second place in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham behind the smart Overhaul (9.3). Last
autumn.) Mister Gamp had a bad fall when being schooled at Awapuni. The mishap sent him back somewhat, and, judging by the number of falls he experienced during winter racing, it would appear that he lacks the confidence be showed in his earlier racing over hurdles. Mister Gamp has certainly not done anything like as well last season as one would expect, but he is still young as jumpers go, and next winter he may again reveal.his true capabilities as a hurdler.' ■ Galloped On. \ ■ ■ Taboo was. galloped, on during the running of his engagement on the second day of last > week's Riccarton Meeting, and it was'not deemed advisable to start him on Saturday. - . : Mangani Disappointing. Mangani was " heavily backed for the Sydenhani Hurdles, but he ran a disappointing race. ■He showed plenty of speed in the early part, but he jumped Wretchedly,: hitting a number of hurdles, and eventually'falling at the last flight. His rider;': H. Dulieu, broke a collarbone. The mishap-prevented him from having another ride on Aurora Boreah's, on whom be won the Grand National. Unlucky.. Katiolial ll*. lost some ground at the barrier last Saturday, and as he finished a close third it would appear that his big army of backers were unlucky not to get a return; : ; Expensive Failure. Town Major was an expensive failure in the Heatheote Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. The \ South. Canterbury gelding was a pronounced favourite, but though he got out well he lacked the brilliancy to overhaul the early leaders. He was ridden by H. Gray, whose admirers had an expensive meeting, as Gray failed to pilot a winner^ during the week,
