A GIANT OF THE PAST

OLD NUKUMAI

Old' Nukumai ran a fine race in last Thursday's Grand National Hurdle Race at Riccarton, and followed that performsncs by fully extending Carinthia in the Sydenham Hurdles on Saturday last. While ■yie form exhibited by Nukumai last week was his best for some time, it was many pounds inferior to some of his former efforts. Obviously the old gelding is on the down grade. Seeing that Nukumai started racing ia the spring of 1922, and has been wound up for many important faces on the flat, over hurdles, and steeplechases, It is not surprising that he is not now as good as of old. Nukumai is now in hia twelfth year, and as he has not proved a success as a steeplechaser, it tftay be that the present season will be his list as a racehorse.
