BOY SAFEGUARDED
POWER BOARD APPRENTICE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., This Day,
A case of interest to power boards and supply authorities was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day, when the Wellington Electrical Industrial Union appealed against a contract passed by the local Apprenticeship Committee authorising the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board to apprentice a boy to tho electrical trade. The ground of appeal was that the contract of apprenticeship should be with another employer so that the youth could obtain his wireman's licence.
For the union it was contended that during ,the apprenticeship the youth would not have received the training in wiring which was necessary for him. to secure a wireman's licence. The union preferred a youth to have three years' wiring experience, and then bo transferred to tho Power Board for theoretical training.
Eoplying to his Honour, Mr. Watters, the Power Board's engineer, said the board would undertake to give lads training to enable them to bo registered. The Court suggested as a fair solution thnt the contract should be endorsed: "It shall be a term of this contract that the employer shall during the term of: apprenticeship provide the apprentice with such training and experience as to satisfy tho requirements of the wircmen's registration board in order to enable tho apprentice to obtain registration." This was agreed to.
