TO LIE IN STATE

LATE SIR MAUI POMARE

Tho Government has made arrangements for the remains of tho late Hon. Sir Maui Pomare to lie in state at Parliament House next week.

It was announced by the Minister of Native Affairs (the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata) to-day that advice had been received that Lady Pomare would arrive, with the urn containing the ashes of her late husband, at Wellington by the Makura on Monday next. The urn would be placed in a carved Maori casket, and the lying in state would take place in the vestibule. Local Maoris, including representatives from Porirua, would first pay their respects, a special hour being set aside for that purpose. It would then bo open for the public to view the casket.

It had been further arranged that the remains would be taken to Waikanae by the afternoon express on Wednesday, 27th August, in compliance with the wishes of the "Waikanae, Otaki, and Manawatu Natives. On the Thursday night a special train would leave Wellington for the benefit of members of Parliament who wished to attend the obsequies at AVaitara on the Friday morning. Lady Pomaro's party would join the train at Waikanae. On Friday a tangi would be held at Waitara, whore tho ashes would bo' deposited in a vault.
