DROUGHT RELIEF

PRESIDENT'S PROGRAMME

FARM BOARD'S ADVANCES

WASHINGTON, 16th August,

The Federal Government took its first major step in carrying out a drought relief programme when Mr. Hyde, Secretary of Agriculture, authorised the immediate apportionment of 121,875,000 dollars for highway improvement, enabling the States to .provide employment for farmers left destitute. Under the law the States must appropriate an equal sum for the same purpose. One of the greatest problems facing the Department of Agriculture is the transfer of 500,000 cattle and two million sheep from the blighted plains of Montana to feeding pens in nearby States. Mr. Hyde and Mr. Legge (chairman of the Farm Board) are spending the week-end at President Hoover's mountain camp to consider the problem. The Farm Board meantime is preparing to advance five million dollars to the National Live Stock Marketing Association for the purpose of beginning the transfer of stock from Montana.

The weather bureau has predicted further showers in the drought areas. Heavy rains fell throughout tho Connecticut valley to-day. However, the damage to various crops, particularly tobacco, totals a million dollars.
