GROWN AREA'S WIN

A TKIDIIPH FOE HER " ..-.:: - OWNBR-TRAINER : jiWi»a~ trained by G. New at Awapuni, {fanra Area was looked on as a brilliant 'printer, and although, he ran out'a good mile;."to "win the Hutt Handicap at Trentham' in the autumn of 1928, the journey . was quite as far as Crown Area was then capable of. Bought by the. late J. M'Combe, Crown Area was taken across to' Australia, but he failed to show'quite his best form for the Riccarton owner-trainer, and Ms defeats were very costly, as he was substantially barked more than once. Secured at a large figure by the Sydney trainer, W. Booth, Crown Area appeared for & time to lose all his earlier speed, but two months ago. Booth brought off a big betting coup, when Crown Area won the Exeter- Handicap at Randwick. On that occasion, he carried the substantial ■weight of 9.12, to win this mile event from a good class field in the smart time <5f lmin 38% sec. That performance clearly indicated that Booth had at last sot the big gelding well. Working further Improvement in Crown Area, Booth won the Rosebill Handicap last Saturday. The fleld was first-class, and as the distance, extended to ten furlongs, was run in the fast time of 2min s%sec,' a course record), i|he Sydney owner-trainer must be given credit for accomplishing a wonderful imftfovement in Crown Area.
