Commenting on the establishment "of an experimental orchard in Nelson, "The-Orchardist." states:—
"The Government has made a. decision of great importance •to all New Zealand fruitgrowers. In spite of the present great shortage of money, recognising the great importance of * research to our fruit industry, it has decided to contribute £690 to the capital cost, and £810 towards.the- first year's maintenance cost of the first research station in New Zealand, and has .further agreed to provide £1500 per anjnum for four years towards maintenfmice..ln addition to these' grants, the [Empire Marketing Board is .supplying I one-third of the capital fiost and three- | eighths of the annual maintena'ncccos.ts per year, for five, .years..-,-.The,''negotia-tions to ■ secure this- roseareu orchard' have been pi a prbtracted nature, • and were, only brought to finality..by the Fruit Export Control Board 'donating j
£1250, and by the unceasing" efforts of the Hon. Harry Atniore." We can truly say that had it not been for Mr.' Atmore's great enthusiasm ! ; and -perseverance, this research stationVtfoul'cL'iiit yet be secured. Nelson groovers- ; have reason to be pleased in having this, research orchard located in th^ir midst, and the-other provinces ate.to.be. congratulated at their brqadminded attitude in not raising parochial views. Tha orchard is located on the. S'tciyart Estate in Nelson, and comprisesl Mr; Edyvean's propertyof 29 acres, 20 acres of which arc-already planted and in full bearing, and.43 acres of virgin: .land adjoining Mr. Edyvean's^ property. The property is owned by the Scientific;ahd Industrial Research Department," and will be managed-by-the Department of Agriculture. It is ■ hoped :-,that it .will. b« possible^ for Mr. J..H'.
