"OVER THE FENCE"
CHARGE FOR TRAFFIC CONTROL
A request from the City Council that the union should contribute'towards thei cost of controlling the traffic on the occasion of the fourth Test, match on Saturday was rejected by the Management Committe of the Wellington Rugby Union last evening, when the chairman, Mr. J, Prerideville, stated that he considered the expense was a fair charge on the council. The letter from the Town Clerk, Mr. E. P. Norman, stated' that controlling the traffic would involve, at least au extra twenty men being engSged, ten of whom would be occupied in regulating the parking of the cars in the vicinity of the ground.. It wasJ suggested that-the. union should contribufe' £7/ being the ■ wageß of ten men at 2s an'-.h<jur for six hours each, and £1 towards the cost of advertising the arrangements.: . ' ' Mr; Prendeville referred to the amount the "council collected annually. in rates from the union,: some £2269, and said that the control of the traffic was a public service which, the council was bound to perform. "I would like to know what we pay rates for," he said. "If this is carried out we will find individuals being! asked to pay for the cost of controlling' the traffic at a popular wedding, or at the funeral of a widely respected citizen. I consider it is altogether over the fence, and the City Council will easily recoup themselves from the increased tram revenue." ! Mr. Prendeville's motion that the council be advised that the committee considered that the charge should be met by the council was passed. It was mentioned that the union was controlling the traffic within the ground. A correspondent, writing from Masterton, referred to the crush that wad likely to result at the gates when the crowd was leaving, and it wns stated in reply that the gates were easily wide enough io allow the 'crowd to pass through at the rate at which they could make their way down tho street. An appeal is to be made to the public to avoid causing a crush when leaving! the ground. , • *
