FRIAR MEMORIAL PRIZE
(By Telegraph.) i (Special to "The Evening Post.") MASTERTON, This Day. | Tho William Robert Friar Memorial Prize for 102Q-30 in the New Zealand Central Command has been awarded to a Masterton Senior Cadet, Sergeant H. E. Bungate. Tho award means that Sergeant Bungate is classed as the best and keenest cadet in the extensive area of the Central Commaud—i.e., Taranaki, Poverty Bay, Wellington, and Hawkes, Bay provinces. The prizes are awarded in memory of William Robert Friar, of Onehunga, the first New Zealand cadet to go Home and bo welcomed by tho late Earl Roberts, under the scheme of Imperial Cadet educational journeys to and from ; the overseas Dominions instituted by the famous Field-Marshal. Later, as a rifleman in the N.Z. Expeditionary Force, Friar was mortally -wounded at Passcaendaele. Surgeon-Captain R. J. E. Hanson, the honorary secretary of the Imperial Cadet Association of England, presents annually to New Zealand three copies of Lord Roberta's book, "Forty-one Years _in India," to the memory of Rifleman Friar. These books aro allotted as, prizes to New Zealand cadets, ono each to the Northern, Central, and Southern commands, and are preserted to tbs best aril keenest cadet of euslx commaud. In 1927-28 tho Friar Memorial Px-we was won by Cadet Sergeast Grantham, of Masterton, so that E Company has twice in three years attained this noteworthy distinction.1- ; •
