CONTROL OF CYCLING
OPERATION OF NEW BOARD
Preliminary arrangements having been made, steps* are being taken to ensure :the operation of the Cycling Board of Control, in which the New Zealand Amateur Athletic' Association and the New Zealand. Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union are jointly -interested.
When the council of the N.Z.A.A.A. met last evening the chairman (Mr. H. Austad) said he thought it wise that the new Board of Control should be, put into operation immediately. Mr. Austad stated that he was sure. the board would obtain world-wide recognition eventually, and that it would provide the means for the better government of cycling in New Zealand. ■ :
The Canterbury Centre submitted the names of Messrs. C. H. Taylor and T. Grose (Canterbury) as the N.Z.A.A.A. representatives on the board, subject to approval by the other centres.
The two representatives nominated were acceptable to the council, Mr. Austad remarking that he thought they were the two men best suited to hold the positions.
The New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union is also moving, and according to a letter received, the representatives of the union on the board are likely to be Messrs. J. Kennedy and W. J. Walker.
In a letter to the council, Sir Thomas Wilford (High Commissioner) gave an assurance that he would be glad to do anything he could to assist in furthering the joint application of the N.Z.A.A.A. and' the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union for' affiliation with the world governing body of cycling as the controlling organisation of cycling in New Zealand. Sir Thomas said he would get into touch:with those concerned and advise the council later when he had some information to give. At the request -of the council the Canterbury Centre has made inquiries about the position of Mr. H. D. London, for-, merly of Wellington, but now living in Christchurch. Writing on the subject, the secretary of the Canterbury Centre said that Mr. London, who is a member of the Canterbury Centre's Cycling Subcommittee, was also- a vice-president in the New Zealand Union of Cyclists. The Papanui Cycling Club and the Cycling Sub-committee have been informed of the position, arid a request has) been made by the centre to debar Mr. London from taking any further part in the control of cycling under the auspices of the N.Z.A.A.A. Mr. London has been given an opportunity of stating in writing whether he intends to remain under the jurisdiction of the N.Z.A.A.A. or whether he intends remaining with the New Zealand Union of Cyclists.
